Round Island Route
The Round Island Route (RIR) is a major recreational project in Singapore designed to create a continuous 150-kilometer trail that loops around the entire island. When fully completed, it will be the longest recreational connection in Singapore, linking parks, nature areas, and urban spaces across various regions.
Key Features:
1. Comprehensive Connectivity: The RIR will connect existing park connectors, nature trails, and cycling paths, offering seamless access to different parts of Singapore. This includes iconic locations like the East Coast Park, Gardens by the Bay, and the Western Adventure Loop.
2. Scenic and Diverse Landscapes: The route will traverse a wide range of environments, from coastal paths and riverside trails to urban parks and green corridors. This allows users to experience Singapore’s natural and urban beauty in a single journey.
3. Multi-Use Paths: The RIR is designed for various activities, including cycling, jogging, and walking. The wide, well-maintained paths will accommodate users of all ages and fitness levels, encouraging outdoor recreation and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
4. Environmental and Cultural Highlights: Along the route, users will encounter significant natural and cultural landmarks. The trail will pass through ecological zones, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife and enjoy Singapore’s biodiversity. Additionally, cultural heritage sites will be accessible, allowing for educational experiences.
5. Community Engagement: The RIR is expected to become a popular spot for community events, outdoor activities, and social gatherings. Its accessibility and extensive reach across the island will make it a central feature of Singapore’s recreational infrastructure.
6. Phased Development: The Round Island Route is being developed in phases, with certain sections already open to the public. Future phases will gradually extend the route until the entire loop is completed.
Significance:
The Round Island Route represents Singapore’s commitment to creating green, sustainable urban spaces that encourage active lifestyles and foster a connection with nature. It is a key element in the nation’s broader plan to enhance liveability and environmental stewardship, providing residents and visitors with a unique way to explore the island’s diverse landscapes.
The first phase of the Round Island Route (RIR) was launched on 22 January 2022, covering a 75-kilometer stretch that forms the eastern half of Singapore. This section begins at Rower’s Bay in the northeast, extends past the Singapore River, and ends at Berlayer Creek in the south. It represents the island’s longest recreational connection, providing a continuous path that encircles the eastern region of Singapore. This phase is part of a broader plan to create a 150-kilometer loop around the entire island, enhancing recreational opportunities and connectivity for residents and visitors alike.
